| Greece is the southernmost country in Europe, that is until the EU's newest member, Cyprus, becomes official. With a geographical area covering 131,940 sq. km, Greece is almost the same size as England or New York State. The majority of its borders are water while its land borders are with Albania, Skopia, Bulgaria and Turkey. There are about 2,000 Greek islands scattered in the East Mediterranean Sea, of which about 200 are estimated to be inhabited. The climate is mostly dry despite the fact that it snows in the mountains and the north. The country's ancient civilisation, which has greatly influenced latter civilisations born worldwide, contributes to the respect and elevation of Greece as a country. |
